Work, benefits and housing

Being HIV-positive doesn’t mean you are disabled. You can work if you are well and fit. However, HIV-positive people are protected by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). This Act covers a lot of long-term illnesses. It protects people from being treated differently because of their health.

Telling your employers about your status

Generally, there is no rule that you have to tell your employer about your status, unless you work in healthcare. But it could make things easier for you. When you disclose to employers, the DDA protects you from being treated unfairly. Employers are also obliged to help you find ways to work effectively. They might be more flexible, allowing you time off to deal with appointments or sickness.

In times of ill health, you can access benefits. This money from the government can help you with the cost of living.

Possible benefits:

  • Housing Benefits
  • Council Tax Benefits
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Working Tax Credits
